My boys want this game for Christmas..and I am not really understanding it....How many actual games are there? And what are they called? Can series one and two both played on the same portal??? I am so confused help me

There are two actual game discs. Spyro's Adventures is the first game released. The Skylanders Giants is the 2nd game released to be used with the Skylanders characters. The portals can be used with either game. To start up you must have a game disc for whatever system you are using(wii, x-box, playstation) and a portal.
Then you have about 45 different characters that interact with the games. Some of the newer released characters will only work with the second disc (giants) others will work with both. They do tell you on the outside of the package if they are compatible with both games or only the second one. I saw at Target yesterday that they have a starter set for all three systems on sale for 49.00. Normally they are 75.00. Starter set gives you game disc, portal, and 3 characters. Listia has a starter set for x-box 360 in the rewards section for 61,000 credits. (at least they did, it might be gone by now)

Yes the skylanders level up and gain different strengths, fighting abilities, etc. This information stays in the skylander character and he can be used on any other portal/system. Also, you receive specific codes for your character and he can also be played on line.
