Zuni pipestone badger. Carved by Marlo Booqua. Measures 1-1/2 inches long by ¾ wide.
The badger is the protective animal of the south. It is believed that the badger helps medicine men and shaman dig the roots and herbs needed in healing.

The best way I can describe it to a non native American such as myself it would be like angels that help us accomplish things. Only they were spirit of the animals that helped hunters, medicine men heal and so on. To the native American everything held life and was sacred and if you killed an animal you thanked it for feed you and so on.
