No such thing as a stupid question!
Brads are used as decorations in paper crafting projects. You can join papers together using a brad, kind of like a staple or paper clip... You push the back of the brad though a paper(s) and then separate the two pieces of metal on the back, pushing them flat against the back of the paper. You can use a tiny hole punch to make the hole, and then put the brad back through also.
