FRECKLE FACE BLACKBERRY LILY -aka- Leopard Lily

Belamcanda chinensis 'Freckle Face'

"Blackberry Lily -aka- "Leopard Lily", this is actually a member of the Iris family (Iridaceae) but named for its lily-like growth habit. The plants begin blooming in mid-summer of the 2nd year. Seeds can be germinated in pots or direct sown into soil in the fall, about 6 weeks before the first frost.

The "blackberry" part of its name comes from the appearance of the seed pods that follow its blooms. They open up when the seeds are mature and reveal what looks like the biggest, plumpest blackberries you've ever seen -- but they are not edible.

Freckle Face Blackberry Lily likes a spot that gets partial sunlight, esp. in the afternoon, but will do well in full sun in USDA zones 6 or below. The full growing range of this plant is USDA zones 4a to 10b.

It has average watering needs -- avoid overwatering.
