Description

The listing, Heirloom Herb ✽ BRONZE FENNEL ✽ 15 Seeds ✽ Organic has ended.

These are are seeds from one of my favorite herbs and butterfly host plants, Bronze fennel. The Black Swallowtail lays its eggs upon the frilly foliage. Young plants start a bronze/purple color, maturing to bronze/green. It is a stately plant and smells wonderful when brushed against. This plant comes back many times the next year, but save seeds just in case. It has many uses in cooking or for herbal tea. The entire plant can be used. I even dry the thickest stalks for a fun treat for my dogs. They also look amazing in planters.

Family: Apiaceae (ay-pee-AY-see-ee)
Genus: Foeniculum (fen-IK-yoo-lum)
Species: vulgare (vul-GAIR-ee)

Category:
Biennials

Height:
4-6 ft. (1.2-1.8 m)
Zones 4-9 (grow as an annual everywhere else)

This Auction: You will be receiving 15 seeds from my garden. They will be sent First Class mail. I am happy to say that my seeds tested 99-100% germination within 2 weeks at a temp of 65°F in the spring of 2012. Excellent for beginners!

Propagation Method: From seed, sow seeds indoors 6 weeks before last spring frost. Sow 3-5 seeds per pot. About 10 days before the last spring frost, begin hardening the plants to the outdoors. Transplant your plants to a sunny location.

I have alot of fennel but never thought about making tea or eating it.I enjoy looking at how neat it looks and I watch for the catipillers.I love the smell of black licorish when you touch the plant :)

The same for me. I planted it originally because it was pretty and attracted so many butterflies to the garden. You can still use it once the butterflies are done though. You can cut back the whole plant in the fall. I take the largest stalks and dry them to play sticks with the dogs. Everything else can be ground to make wonderful tea. If you grind it to dust, you can also use it in Italian sauce or even as a dry flea repellent dust for dogs. It doesn't get much more versatile than that! Yes, and the smell is incredible.
