Wartime Jefferson Nickels were released by the United States Mint during the years of 1942-1945. Each has a composition of 56% copper, 9% manganese and 35% silver for a total silver weight of 0.05626 ounces.
Questions & Comments
The silver war nickels have a prominent mint mark on the reverse above Monticello. The one pictured does not have the mint mark of a silver nickel. They did produce almost 50 million 1942 (P) non-silver nickels, which is what this appears to be.
