The listing, Vintage Corday "Unicorn in Captivity" Gold Tone Filigree Locket Pendant has ended.
Vintage unsigned but made by Corday Unicorn in Captivity Large Round Gold Tone Filigree Locket Pendant. CHAIN NOT INCLUDED.
This gold tone vintage filigree locket features a unicorn in a corral leaping in front of a pomegranate tree. Is is a replica image of the seventh tapestry in a series called "The Unicorn Tapestries." It is referred to as "The Unicorn in Captivity". Also as told about in the movie "Harry Potter". All seven tapestries can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, hanging in the Cloisters, which houses the museum's medieval collection. There is also a famous poem written by
Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of Charles Lindbergh, about this Unicorn in Captivity.
In the Middle Ages, the unicorn was a symbol for many things, including immortality, marriage, love and wisdom. Many Christians believe it represents the Passion of Christ, including his persecution, death and resurrection.
The locket originally contained sachet perfume which has since been cleaned out, leaving some space within the locket for you to stash a small treasure. No actual
markings on it but it appears to have been made by Corday.
It's time-worn patina definitely gives it that vintage chic look. It is 1 1/2" in diameter with a spring action closure.
The Unicorn in Captivity
"Here sits the Unicorn
In captivity;
His bright invulnerability
Captive at last;
The chase long past,
Winded and spent,
By the King's spears rent;
Collared and tied
To a pomegranate tree --
Here sits the Unicorn
In captivity,
Yet free."
Anne Morrow Lindbergh
