Color enhancement and procedure: Sometimes gemstones are only heated. A good example of this is amethyst which is heated to produce the yellow "citrine". Also blue sapphire can be heated to produce a more beautiful blue color. Sometimes a stone is heated in the presence of other chemicals. For example, when a sapphire is heated to very high temperatures (1700 centigrade or so) in the presence of certain elements, those elements actually penetrate the stone and become part of the crystal structure which enhances the color. In other instances, stones that have natural fractures that reach the surface of the stone can by dyed. The dying agent leaches into the stone and creates the illusion of color that is not natural. If a stone has no natural fractures to hold the dye, those fractures can be created by heating the stone, then cooling it rapidly to created fractures for the dye. This is called "quench crackling". Another way that a stone can be color enhanced is with radiation. A green diamond is a good example of this. Natural green diamonds are exceedingly rare, but because of treatment with radiation this "man-made" color is much more affordable. Also, there are surface coatings that make a stone look better than it did after it was polished. The latest method is being used on tanzanite and can be more difficult to detect than previous coating methods. This information does not devalue this item at all. This is common amongst most precious stones of this carat weight and opacity. Hope this helped.
