Description

The listing, Dragon Fruit Seeds (15) has ended.

I grow several varieties of Dragon Fruit cactus but here in the northern part of Pa, we haven't had hot summers until this year so am in hopes of mine flowering and fruiting soon. A wonderful woman from Cal. sent me the fruit that you see in these pics. There is no name to the variety but will tell you that the seeds you are receiving will be from one of these and the taste is mild but sweet and something like grape/kiwi with a nice SWEET lemon aftertaste. These are not dessert cactus they are tropicals and will need to be protected in winters where you dip below 45 degees. Will need some kind of support when they grow or the "arms" will sprawl all over the place. Could grow up to 25' mine never grow past 6' I keep mine in pots. Care when handling they do have prickers...not bad one unless you stick your whole arm in a mass of them but you do want to be careful. Night flowering, and is pollinated by bats and moths. The dragon fruit cactus is starting to receive attention and has been on many collectors lists. The fruit to these seeds were red skin with white flesh. The seeds are so small you won't have to worry about eating them at all.
If anyone reading this is a member on other gardening sites that has dragon fruit cactus to trade, e-mail me your link, what you have and what you are looking for to trade. Thanks

I LOVE dragonfruit, especially the one with red flesh ever since I got back from asia. Thing is... my climate can't grow it since I'm up by Seattle.

Hey Liz! How are ya??? With the Dragon cactus, i grow in the house until we have warm days and nights and leave it out...you can keep harvesting some arms off it to keep it withing a good size. I just found in a yard sale some strong metal supports that would be great for this...except I will have to wrap something around the metal so it won't burn when it is outside.

If you have 70 degrees and up in summer it's fine outside, when it gets 45 degrees and under that's when you take it inside.

Blue --
wow -- you have everything -- I would love to get a look at your gardens!!!...
I tried this fruit just this week -- a friend brought me one -- it was yummy.
I guess if I got another one from the store -- I could just use those seeds to grow it??
So much, so much to learn.

Hi Sky!!!! Yes, when you open the fruit up, spoon out some seeds and rinse in colander and let air dry. I am not sure how long the seeds are viable so probably plant them just after they are nicely dry. From what I've read, you might or might not get the same fruit BUT I have never had a dragon I didn't like! lol
Right now I am grafting a Purple Haze dragon to an extremely rare red flowering dragon (was told years ago that the red is also self pollanating) now that this year in my area of the country, we have summer! Last year we only had 2 weeks of 70 degrees, the rest was wet and really cold! But the grafts seem to have taken, now to give it a boost in growing.
Maybe I will look into a place on the internet where we can talk gardening, I had a site on Ning.com but they are now closing up. Gardenersindex could be one, will let you know and if you are interested, we could chat more on plants, seeds and growing oddities there :)
Want to ask, around here (very rarely) dragon fruit is available but they charge $8.00 just for one fruit. If your area is alot less, would you contact me if interested working out a price for shipping if you would send me some fruit?

Sky, I forgot to mention, I meant to pay for the fruit and the shipping. Also with the colander, you will want to use a fine mess one or else the seeds will go right through the regular colander.

Hi munchkin, I live in zone 5a and it does well outside from 60 degrees and up, when it gets below 55 take inside and place where it gets alot of light.

If you live in Florida and you don't have freezing temps, it should do well for you. I would think you would have dragon fruit growing there already....I would love to live in Florida! Had enough of cold weather.
