Questions & Comments
These beautiful plants are called tiger lilies (because of their colors) and I took these pictures of my tiger lilies for you a month ago when they were in bloom!
The seed produces a three to four feet tall stalk (with alternating leaf pairs) and makes a striking cluster in the center of a freestanding flowerbed, or in the back of a flowerbed against the house.
The stalk grows first, and the seeds grow against the stalk right where the alternating leaves join the stalk -small and green at first, then reddish as they mature, and almost black and very plump when they are ready to pick off (if you don't pull them off now, they'll roll off into your flowerbed and next year you'll have hundreds of them everywhere!).
Then the large flower buds form at the top of the stalk (several to each stalk) and the bud opens up to form the classic tiger lily pose - the petals curl all the way back on themselves. Yes, the seeds form and mature before the bloom on top appears! They are a vibrant pinkish-orange with brownish-black accents and very beautiful!
The original seed you plant will grown into a small bulb-like root, and your original stalk will grown back from that every year, as well as all the new ones that will pop up all around it from seeds you missed. This is another one of those strange lily plants that grows from a bulb, but produces new seeds each year.
