Description

The listing, 25 Organically Grown Open Pollinated Garlic Chive Seeds has ended.

These are my mothers chives! They are very hardy where we live here in Indiana. I plant them inside a pot, and then leave them out until right before the first frost. They are very productive and have excellent flavor. The chive blossoms are excellent as well; picked just before opening and stir fried with mushrooms in butter with a bit of soy sauce! They grow all throughout the winter indoors as well in a sunny window, and give us fresh chives all winter long. They also spread out quickly and fill up a big pot, so it doesn't take long to get a lot of them from just a little. 25 seeds is definitely enough to fill 2 big pots! These seeds were grown in organic soil, without the use of any fertilizers or pesticides. This listing is for 25 seeds ; )

ok, so unless I have been out of it for years on my cooking ingredients...a chive is in the onion family and a garlic is well, a garlic. So are these a cross-pollination product? If so, that is awesome and I am a huge fan.

The chives have a faint garlic flavor. They both are onion family members and both have similar growth habits but there are a few notable differences.
Taste for one. Chives taste oniony. Garlic chives are well, garlicky. The regular garden chives have long, rounded, straw-like leaves. These garlic chives have long, flat, grass-like leaves. They are not hollow like the onion chives. These garlic chives are called Allium Tuberosum, a member of the onion family. The regular garden chives are also members of the onion family but are called Allium Schoenoprasum, they have purple flowers. Thats really the only difference. We grow both here, they have not crossed as far as I know. They have totally different flowers. These are white flowers with huge umbrella like balls of seeds. I like the garlicky flavor they have : )
