Does it take batteries? If so, what kind and how many?

Yes it takes 2 AA batteries. and No mine are not afraid of the noise. It really doesn't have that much of a noise. More like a hum. I use it on my cat, 2 dogs and my parrot.
It may take a time or two for your pets to get used to it as anything new.
