Issued in conjuntion with the 50th anniversary of the National Council of Negro Women, this stamp honors educator Mary McLeod Bethune. Bethune (1875-1955) organized the Council in 1935 and also served as an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a member of his “Black Cabinet.” Upon Bethune’s death, columnist Louis E. Martin said, “She gave out faith and hope as if they were pills and she some sort of doctor.”
