Description

The listing, ULTRA RARE VINTAGE 80's TRANSFORMERS ROBOT WATCH gumbal prize/ comic mail away ERMAGERD.. IT WORKS! has ended.

This is for a VERY RARE Vintage Transforming robot watch from the early 80's. This was a PRE-TRANSFORMERS Quartz product.
This RED version is WORKING!!! Very hard to find one of these in working order.

There is a small black blotch on the lower left corner of the digital watch face, and one of the number panels is fading. You can see these flaws in the pictures. Also, the buttons are very sensitive. The person who replaced the batteries said that the problem could be corrected, but he wasn't a watch repair guy so he didn't want to cause any harm. I was also informed that the batteries will have a draining issue, and that there is no avoiding this unless the original battery type can be found from the 80's (good luck finding a working watch battery that old).
So I will be including several back up batteries. I was also told that there was no corrosion from the old battery that was removed. I take that guy's word for it, I've bought tested game systems from the same guy with no problem.

The robot and wristband very clean, no rusty screws, everything is in GREAT CONDITION.

These are over 30 years old and most people forgot about them. Before the 'Transformers' brand came to America, kids in the early 80's had these as a popular transforming toy.

These used to be found as the top tier prize in the quarter prize machines that gave away the rubber mini robot erasers & pencil toppers. They also could be obtained by mailing out a coupon cut out of comic books. As a kid, I bought mine at my local swap meet. All the kids on the block had one, and eventually lost or broke it.

Decades later I was lucky enough to find this at my local swap meet yet again. The grey version I had that didn't work, in lesser condition, sold at a GIN price of 22,222 credits on Listia. I almost kept this, but since the grey one, I've had requests to list this one.

This will be shipped in a bubble mailer with tracking.

Good luck winning this awesome piece of geek history!!!

These have been sitting on my booth long enough. I usually deal in the Takara brand of transforming watches. Should I list the Jet? lol

Usually the big prize was near the top of the machine but sometimes the nicer vendors buried it in the middle. If it was near the top and you could see it, you knew you weren't going to be getting it. Not seeing it was a pretty good sign. The prize was pretty much always in there. When they started at the top, I would watch it over the course of a few weeks until most of the prizes were won and it was buried, then I'd start feeding in my quarters to that machine.

I remember 10 cent machines, actually. At K-Mart, my favorite would give you two little books of tattoos for 10 cents. We used to ask my Dad for a dime, not a quarter. I also collected Baseball cards back then, when they still came with a stick of gum and were the same price as a candy bar. My Dad would let us get baseball cards instead of a candy bar on Friday nights when we would watch a movie on TV and we were allowed to pick out a candy bar to go with our popcorn (made on the stove or air popped, no microwave popcorn yet). Wow, I feel like an old man.

Looks like I might get another great deal on an awesome watch from you. Maybe you should start selling these to me for cash. I would have given you $30 bucks for this no problem.

The non-working grey one I sold went for over 20k with the GIN, weeks before the end time. This one is going all the way to the end, so let's see if there are last minute bidders. Maybe a lucky winner might get this working version for cheaper! :-)

WOW how cool. I got one just like it but it says Takara. Is mine generic? Good luck with your auction!! I think I'll list mine after yours finishes! I'm impressed how high the bids are going, awesome!
Feb 4th, 2013 at 10:40:01 PM PST by
Original
NOPE! Yours is the real deal. Mine is leaning more towards the generic. Yours is made by Takara, the company that made Transformers in Japan (before the toy line was sold to Hasbro in America).

The one I have value $20-40.

Yours is about the same value, or double if you have the chrome one! If you still have the box then you are looking at $100-$300
Good job preserving that!

MrFleamar... I see now what you were talking about, when the Takara brand were actually released in America. I've never had one of those, I've always had the Japan versions.

The robot/watch in this auction is neither Japan or America Takara, this is just the bootleg brand that was found in comic book mail-aways, gumball machines, and (where I got mine) the swap meet. These ended up being just as collectable as the Takara (watch-q or kronoform brands).

BTW I had my friend list my Jet on his Ebay (since I hate Ebay, I just use Listia). Take a look... http://www.ebay.com/itm/1984-TAKARA-JAPAN-Watch-Q-Transformers-G1-F-15-Jet-NIB-ULTRA-RARE-VINTAGE-/181070903456?pt=US_Action_Figures&hash=item2a28aab8a0

For sure! Having one of these in my possession again makes me wish I never lost my original one. These were the only toys that kids were able to bring to school, because during class it's our watch, but during recess they were robots! And the battles I'd have with my friends.... epic.

I won this one in a 25 cent machine at HIlls when I was a kid. I was so excited. They don't seem to have top prizes in gumball machines anymore.

Original
Wow really? I thought that was always a teaser, cause when I was a kid I'd always see it offered but could never spot the prize through the glass.

As a GIN bonus I'll probably be throwing in the cardboard backing for the prize machines, the board that displayed the watch and other items. I just so happen to have one.

Well you seem to know more than me about these MrFleamar. I have found many different packaged versions of this same item. I didn't know they had individual names. I thought the quartz versions were just robots and that's it. As far as I knew, the only vintage robot watches I know about are the watch-q / takara watches that had different versions of the transformers, the handpistol, jet, car, ghetto blaster, and robot. They even had a chrome version of the robot.
