To keep the cords with them if you look at it you can see the cords are with each piece. They also run off batteries a 9 volt.

Fanned you back. Yes you can use them for any thing like that. we had already used a pair for my husband when he was in his shop to communicate with each other. Yes it really worked good for my grand father.
