Questions & Comments
I really need this big time. I have 3 grown cats and 2 puppies under 6 mon. and they have them pretty bad and my heart breaks to watch them constantly scratch. They are my babies. F & W.
Have 2 indoor and 2 outdoor cats, it's pretty cold here in IL but they still have fleas somewhat, all are rescue cats that were abandoned and in the case of our 2 outdoor cats showed signs of previous abuse and neglect. Still trying to help Buddy our 7-9 yr old female outdoor cat overcome some of her issues, OJ was shoved out the door once his owner died and the adult kids didn't want to be bothered with a long haired tabby, he's a real sweet heart and no longer emaciated, several small feedings a day seems to have worked well for him, he went from a cat you could see every bone in his body and probably not far from death since he was an indoor cat all his life and has no clue how to hunt to a handsome fluffy cat who is at 7lb the vet thinks he should be closer to 10 but because of how emaciated he was in the beginning it'll take time and extra feedings of high protein food to give him what he needs to be a healthy weight.
you are a real blessing to take the time and care for the unwanted loves.as for the one that was amaciated you can also offer him human ensure a few times a week this will help put weight on also. and it helps with immune system.
Rascal (my profile pic) was 6 weeks old when my brother brought her home, he'd found her in a snowstorm and since no one claimed her we kept her, she loves mischief. Spike is our 6 1/2 month old kitten he was 3 weeks old when we found him at a friend's house after dog sitting for them, he was too little to fend for himself and since they have an older cat and a dog and neither liked the kitten we kept him, he's now a happy fast growing ginger tabby with a love for TROUBLE! He's up to 10lb now and is only 1/2 grown he's kind of stocky built so he'll be a big boy by the time he's full grown.
we have a cat that was hit by a car right in front of us he was not even 6 weeks old. and my daughter an i saved him his only issiue is he has lost the use of his frount leg, and keeps it tucked under him but the vet says he is fine with it still, becouse he uses it as a counted balance. and just last week my husband came in with the cutest little gray and black kitten 5 weeks old is what we have come up with becouse he barily had his frunt teeth in. he was found in the engineof his truck , luck for him my husband was checking the oil.or we would have not found him
my cats have been on this for 3 yrs now and their coats are shinnier. and the fleas are staying off them now every once in a will i might find 1 or 2 when they come in from their play yard , but they are not bitting them and the cats have even stoped having ear mites.thank you all for sharing your stories i love to hear from pet parents and if you have any questions just ask i will do my best to answer you
Glad your husband found the kitten before he started the truck. Glad your other cat is doing well also. We love our cats and feed the grain free high protein varieties of cat food, no fancy feast or whiskas for them. We don't trust the lower grades of food like fancy feast and whiskas or similar brands because we had 2 cats who were eating those brands when they became deathly ill and the vet couldn't do anything more than give them something to keep them comfortable, they were old and died. So we switched to other brands for our dog and remaining cat.
yep nothing but the best for my babies . i buy a few cans to keep on hand but i make my own food and suplanments due to the fact of losing a cat. from food poisioning by the cheep brands.
OJ we found out in the beginning when we offered pediasure as the vet suggested couldn't keep it down, and still can't, the vet had us offer a few other milk products including just plain mozzarella or swiss cheese and still upset tummy troubles, so the vet said just to offer extra food and offer some 80% lean ground beef as 1 meal a day because it would give him some iron as well as a few extra calories, cooked meat of course. Now he's happy with his cat food and sometimes a can of tuna in veggie oil ( the oil is supposed to help cut down on hairball issues), other than a few scratches from a recent fight he got into he's happy and healthy, our vet told us we could use neosporin as long as it doesn't get directly in his eyes. He's not straying too far from home. He's conned 2 elderly neighbor ladies into sharing chicken and tuna with him because he has such a sweet personality and a nice fluffy coat of fur that they think he's irresistible. So between us and the neighbors who adore cute fluffy cats he's gaining weight.
if you can get a hold of fresh goats milk not pasturizes. it is very gental too. and natural butter is good for the hair balls 2i just offer mine a 1/2 tsp a a week and i have a persian so i know about hair balls . lol
OJ we think is lactose intolerant because he can't keep any kind of milk or cheese products down so we just give extra feedings. He seems content with 4-5 feedings a day most of the time. We don't have the heart to turn away a hungry mouth or animals in need of a little TLC. So many people think low income people like us shouldn't even have a pet let alone 4 and feed them what we do, they assume it's costing us a small fortune to feed the grain free organic foods but we're not starving we always have more than enough food in the house and the bills are getting paid, granted there's not usually much more than a couple dollars left over at the end of the week but it's not a big deal to us, we just do whatever has to be done.
oh i know what you mean.i am on disabilaty, and my husband is a disabled vet. who was wounded while working in hazmat cimicals in the navy. so we are on a fixed income also. and we have all kind of animal here. we run a pet rescue center here in louisiana. and get some donations in, but most of the time we are doing it on our own. true we get some funds in for adoptions but most people do not think about the older animals they mostly want puppies or kittens .exc....... and we are a no kill center. so sometimes we have anywhere between 10- our max which is 35 animals at a time . now granted we do get a small check from the vets here but it is not much and it doesnot go very far when it comes to the care and food cost. but we get by just fine, and the animals are all well taken care of till they find their forever homes
We found out this morning that OJ has a girlfriend and a home where he's welcome in the house but also allowed out during the day, an older lady across the street from us saw OJ & her female ginger tabby who's also long haired making eyes and love calls through the screen on the back porch one day, so she figured as nice as he looked she'd offer a little tiki cat canned food which is what she feeds her cats, turns out she's a breeder, but also has a heart for strays, since nobody has "papers" on OJ who she had been calling Charlie til she found out what we call him she said perhaps sometime in the next week or two we should come to some sort of legal agreement for stud fees since we rescued him first and nursed him back to health, since he's not a registered cat but is very close in looks to our neighbor's we assume he's full blood tabby, from some research we've done we could get as much as $150 per litter OJ fathers, it would be nearly double to triple that if he had papers but then again $150 would be helpful. He's already sired one litter and they are really adorable! They look just like the parents fluffy and orange. We're happy that OJ has somewhere to go at night where he's not out in the cold. Our neighbor primarily breeds tabbies and maine coon's. We had no idea she was a cat breeder, she's been living across the street for several years, as long as any of us can remember and seemed shy and content to keep to herself. The cats all appear well taken care of. Food wise she's feeding good stuff, we feed Tiki cat to our cats as well, it's a high protein grain free organic food. It comes in a nice variety and so far none of our finicky felines have gotten bored with it.
that is great that he has another house to go to and is comfortable there to. and seems to be kind of a little fate in there getting you to know your neighbor and all after all that time. animail have a way of knowing what we need even if we do think we need, lol. i have my cats on a food i make myself. becouse i have 1 that has so many alergies it is just easier on me and i know exactly what he gets so if he has an attack, i can quickly deduce what caused itand get him treated and feeling better faster i do hope it all works out with the kitty romance, lol and all tabby cats are one of the more playful breeds there are and they really do not have manyhelth isuses as some other breeds and the long hairs well they still my heart. they are so pretty..
We've thought about making our own food but don't really know where to start and so many call for rice or barley and with 3 cats who can't tolerate any grains it's easier at the moment to buy grain free cat foods, Buddy gets very sick to her stomach after any grain, Rascal & Spike itch horribly, worse than when they have fleas, OJ thankfully seems to be a feline garbage disposal sort of cat who isn't bothered by grains and isn't too finicky.
know about the garbage disposal kitty, i have one that thinks she is human , thinking she has to eat everything we do . but she does have good table maners, she has to be feed when we eat or it is a fight so we got am old high chair for her and she will sit in it eating her food . and she even keeps her paws off the table, lol
That's cute having a highchair for a cat. Rascal stole a plate of Mackerel & Sardines that was supposed to be OJ's this afternoon but it's ok cause what she didn't eat Spike was happy to finish off, OJ wound up with tuna & shrimp for lunch. We like the variety Tiki Cat provides for cats and our cats love it! Buddy is the exception to that though because she doesn't like sardines except for when it's in the Mackerel & Sardine variety. OJ could care less as long as he gets his belly full.
They do keep us laughing at their antics. I'm hoping my idea of giving Spike a bath the next time he starts throwing water at me will make him quit. He's such a brat sometimes.
I know I'm going to need luck LOL! Spike decided this morning that he would rather curl up and sleep on mom's be near Rascal instead of playing water wars or getting into other mischief :-) Saturday mornings have that effect on Rascal & Spike, they're lazy and sleep late.
will be say my payers for you and the bath. i do bath my cats but the ones i do i have had sence they were kittens , and i started them off then, the ones i got at older ages i use huggies baby wipes on and it gives them a nice powder smell. expecially my himalayan cat keep a natural powder smell.
