The listing, Unknown 1856 Coin made into a pin has ended.
I don't know what this is so here's what I do know. Initials on front. Seated Lady with a shield and the word "Liberty" on the shield. Liberty is readable. 1856 date which is very clear.
On the other side are some initials. I can't make them out even with a magnifier..
I tried to take clear photos of this for you.
Questions & Comments
Fascinating! I had never seen a coin like that, so I asked my friend Google, lol! It turns out that the brooch has been made from an antique coin, a very VALUABLE coin! There are some listed on eBay, and the lowest buy it now price is $14.30 for coins in much worse condition. Just google "1856 liberty seated dime" and see for yourself! :)
I didn't know what it was either. My Mom gave me some of my Dad's stored and forgotten items to list on Listia. I tried to google it also but I guess I didn't know what to ask ...I thought it was just a pin someone made as a curiosity type of thing. I just googled "1856 Liberty seated Dime" All I can say is wow!! Teresa239 your absolutely wonderful! Huge hugs for all the help with this!! Can I say your Awesome!!?? Well you are!
Looks to me like a Seated Liberty Dime. Someone sanded off the reverse to make a pin of it. While it ruined the desirability of the coin to collectors, it still retains some value due to the silver content. I would like to bid, but I always get outbid. Sometimes I wonder if Listia is a scam of some type. I have NEVER won anything here. Good luck with your auction, Nancy!
Hi rickcoolbreeze! Yes I was told it was Seated Liberty Dime I honestly don't believe the pin ruined it's desirability to collectors. I've gotten some great info from Teresa and others below Listia isn't a scam or a bad site!! In fact it's wonderful! If you list items to get credits then you can bid and win to get some really great items!!
Thank you so much for your comments and the well wishes!! Hang in here and Good Luck! Listia is awesome!!
Hi Shannon, I do have more of my Dad's to list in a week or so, I would be happy to message you when I post them. Just a reminder to everyone that coins aren't in my interest group, so I really don't know much about them. I'm depending on my fellow listians to help ...
As for the self professed "expert" on all things, NLP, (who has yet to actually contribute anything useful on an auction), I hope Nancy does the right thing (like everyone else you have blessed with your awesome knowledge) and blocks you !!! You would think that someone who professes to be so "in tune" with nature, would be a little more considerate of others.
Thank you so very much bubbayesmar for the great comment! I don't mind the comments but I hate the thoughts of someone just popping in and being rude. I was taught to think first then if you can't say anything nice , simply walk away..lol. The items I listed were all from my Dad's and I didn't know anything about them. The more I learn the happier I am! NLP has commented before on my auctions and always pans the item. Thank you so much for the lovely comment and the great tip!!
Mint condition seated quarters sell regularly at 150$ plus. this being modified removes all value except the metal and sentimental value, just a heads up for everyone. Still a cool piece
Doster I welcome your comment on this. You may not think it's wortth anything but thats ok by me!! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Thank you for stopping by.
Vary nice I'm a coin collector but I also do like the way that people would make jewelry out of old money im practicing and making some myself I've been making a ring out of a 1948 half dollar the old fashion way by using a spoon and just tapping around the outside vary gently so that you don't bend the coin to and if its cut out properly you can see on the inside of the ring it will say United States of America 1948 on the inside of the Ring if done right you're pretty much turning the ring inside out it's a old pirate tricks you google turn coins into ring and it will show you interesting very time consuming I have really got about 60 to 70 hours in just tapping with a spoon but when this one's done I will be putting it on here on I like this 1 too much it is F&W
That's awesome Mrflashback1976! It takes a lot of patience to do what your doing. Thank you for Fanning & watching. So glad your here. Blessings to you...
It does my heart good to see this auction over 10K. Just goes to show all of the "ain't worth" people don't know jack. I especially like the ones that are adament that it's a dime. "Know-it alls" make the best idiots! They always prove themselves... idiots. Bless you and your auction! It's got an hour to make 15K!
I love this pin/coin the craftsmanship is extroidnary, makes ya really think how things were back in the 1800,s,i love it,thanx for such a great auction and god bless nancy 481,already fanned but watching.
Thank you frigman39 for the wonderful words! The coin-pin is so beautiful. I keep looklng at the Initials and the scrolling letters on the front. I'm so glad your watching, I greatly appreciate it. Huge Blessings to you and yours! ((HUGS))
I'm really glad to see this doing so well. I was hoping some of these guys wouldn't get it too cheap! I'd love to see this over 10K where it deserves. Best of luck.
Wow! I'm a fan already and will be here watching. This is a great piece of history!! If I could touch the item,I could possibly tell you how it ended up like this and even the one who wore it. If you believe in this sort of thing,I have a gift that started at the age of 5 and has grown over the years.I think thats where my love of odd items come from.I'd love to win just to touch it.Good luck to all those watching however!. :)
Thank you allislost1!! It would be amazing to know who it was made for..Someone who was cherished and loved.. so dear to them. Thanks for commenting and being a fan!! Hugs & Blessings to you Sweetie...
hey NatureLovinPagan you are right on the monitary value it is a quarter but there was a priceless value to in the thought that had to go into making this a jewler can still remove the initials and imbelish this even more and still have the historical coin backing also a small part of history on son of these pens in the hay day of the no whisky law ppl used them to get in a speak easy and after the c/w xslaves would use these for promise to merrige before they adapted to the rings and made it official
Paul, that is fascinating to know, I love the facts and I hadn't heard of using these to get in a speak easy...Thank you so much for commenting and the historical facts!! Blessings & hugs to you!!
one speak easy in my area used these in a library the guys would set the broach down ask the teller to [ see lady liberty ] they would take them to a book case far in corner opened to a drinking room only liberty coins was used there the coinage size determined the size of the drink
That is wonderful!! I didn't know that..but it sounds like they figured out how to get around prohibition, and still have fun. Thanks so much Paul!! Blessings & hugs...
Wow i cant believe all the comments and great info you have gotten on this beautiful piece of folk art! i am going to join your large group of fans because i love your stuff and you seem like such a nice lady! god bless

Hi Nancy, just popping in for a visit and to read all the fascinating information that your fans have posted. Loved what paulredmon5 said about the speak easy, how cool! You really have a talking piece here! :) I hope your auction does very well, and may I say thank you for always being such a ray of sunshine here on Listia, so friendly and a real Lady! Blessings to you, have a wonderful week!
Teresa,Thank you for popping in for a visit..!! So glad your here. I loved what Paul said about the Speakeasy too. I find it fascinatng and it is a slice of history..Huge Blessings to you sweetie and Joy!!
It comes down to the size, as the Seated Liberty Quarter & Seated Half had the same artwork on the obverse (rear) side. If it compares closely to today's Quarter, then it is. The Half Dollar is larger (nearly 1 1/4") and thicker. If it's a Seated Liberty Half Dollar, it would have been worth, unmolested, in the $200 range or more. Without seeing the true size compared to something else it's hard to nail down. I guess the stars slipped past a few of the others.
wow thats a pretty cool peice that dime is in very nice condition and would have been worth 160 dollars or more had it not been made into jewlery but all in all still a very nice hand made jewlery of the period
Thanks for comenting horsserbmc!! I was just now googling some that miners had like this one. lol..They had picks engraved on the front. I'm finding all the info from Listians so fascinating!! Blessings sweetie...
awesome seated dime! im a avid coin collector. to bad someone turned it into a pin! but its still a very very cool pin. im not sure if im gonna bid or not. but i hope you do very good on this dime/pin!
yes it is he cut out the center left the outside ridge there and twisted it like a rope and heated a small strand of gold on one tip like a knot he always said that was when he tyed the knot
Oh Paul, that is a precious work that he did with love and I'm sure joy! I can picture it now. Now that is something I'd call a real treasure. I wish there were men like your Grand Dad and my Dad in this fast moving world of ours now.
im sorry everyone saying its worth hundreds of dollars if it wasn't made into a pin but it really isn't, i can get one not made into a pin on ebay for $10, to buy it as something to wear as a pin, its great, as a coin collector, its terrible because it was made into the pin, it is still a very cool item and me liking that coin i may bid and use it as a pin, great item though! :)
Thank you ellenogden9 for the nice comment! I have many odd and weird items that have been stored in my home..lol I'm slowly going through things and listing as I go. Hugs and Blessings to you Sweetie!!
