At first I thought it might be a California Fractional Gold Fifty Cents, but concluded that it can't be and must be fake or one of a kind.

Large brass fifty dollar california territorial gold slug facsimile souvenir token

obv: within circle, u.s. heraldic eagle seal with motto banner displaying "in god we trust"; outer legend facsimile of famous california fifty dollar gold slugused by the pioneers" with date "*1850*" below.

rev: within circle the seal of the state of california with legend "eureka" above; outer legend "souvenir pioneer days of california" above and "the days of '49" below.

the california gold rush began in 1848, and to accommodate the californians and '49er pioneers, moffat & co., was the assay office contracted by the provisional government as the temporary mint before the establishment of an official branch mint. ingots, valued at $50 and used as legal tender by merchants and banks, were assayed and stamped by augustus humbert, a new york watch case maker appointed official assayer. the octogonal ingots were stamped with the government stamp with the u.s. eagle on one side. these were commonly known as slugs, and began issue in 1851.

the design and its association with california history made facsimiles of the slugs a favored souvenir item from 1899-1950. they were issued in varieties by businesses, expositions, celebratory events such as centennials, as well as businesses and political campaigns.

the pioneer days days of '49 clebration was held in sacremento in 1922.
