I am in NC in Zone 7 and have had no troubles (knock wood :) ) growing everything from these Luffas to bird house, and even Giant 2 foot across African Kettle Gourds, These Luffas in particular I love because, I popped the seed into the ground, then let them run up my arbor, and on up into the nearby trees. I had large "cucumber' looking Luffas growing in the trees down my garden path. :) At the end of the season, I left them to dry hanging on the vines, then just yanked the whole vine down to harvest them. Easy and cool. Good Luck!

I may list some other gardening things also. I loved having my kids in the garden with me but as they have grown, they have sadly lost their interest in gardening. I use it as my time to have a peaceful place to escape too. :) Keep them gardening if you can. I love it.

Now I am learning new things from you. I just searched and apparently you can eat them when they are young and immature. I did not know that... at http://www.evergreenseeds.com/edibleluffa.html it says you can cook them like you would zucchini. Amazing!
