Every night garden should have these lovelies. Exotic looking and very hardy, these plants get large 4" tall and 4 feet wide with huge 6-7" blooms that open only after the sun has gone down. At night, the blooms appear to be light up as they are so white and stand out in the garden.
Although the flowers last only one night, it blooms so heavily that you have an awesome display all spring thru till the first freeze.
Attracts the huge hawk moth that is as beautiful as the blooms. Bees also will gather the sweet-scented nectar in the very early morning before the sun's rays hit the flowers.
They are extremely easy to grow, transplant well and can be propagated through cuttings and seed. If a branch gets too laden with the unusual and spiky seed balls and breaks, just stick it in the ground. it will root!
Annuals in zones 7-maybe 8 and down. They will come back if winters are mild in warmer zones 9,10,11. They reseed heavily. Cut flower off when wilted until late summer so that the heavy seed pods don't break the branches. Let some wither on the branch and watch the unusual spiky seed pod grow. Harvest seed when seed pod has split open revealing the dark brown seeds that look like large pepper or tomato seeds.
Plant 1/4" deep after all danger of frost. They are not too picky about the soil so long as you fertilize them once a month with a good natural fertilizer. keep water till established and then water well when the leaves look slightly wilted.
