A plaque I found online reads: Wabash Avenue Y.M.C.A.; built 1911-13; addition 1945. An important center of community life, the Chcago YMCA also provided housing and job training for new arrivals from the South during the "Great Migration" of African-Americans in the first decades of the 20th century. It closed as a YMCA in the late 1970s.
One of the 9 structures in the Black Metropolitan-Bronzeville Historic District. Designated on Sept. 9, 1998 by Richard M. Daley Mayor.
