I'm also looking into listing cuttings. Just haven't had time yet... But I will!! And they are pretty but the best part is their scent, roses have nothing on these!!!
Yu know that I do not know how difficult to start from seed, ill need to research that. And I am gonna list some cuttings.....I just found out that they are supposed to dry first before planting. I was concerned that I needed to keep cutting fresh, but not the case. I'm sorry I'm unfamiliar with the zone, but I do know, that these will grow outdoors in the lower 1/3 of the United States. People keep them in colder climes as well, they keep them potted and bring them in during winter. Found that out from previous listings and other Listians. So, regardless of where you live you can grow one. And you can I believe keep indoors. At least I know 1 or 2 people who have. So , let me check out the seed info and difficulty and ill get right back to you. Diane
What I have learned is to first soak them overnight in a wet paper towel, I put mine in a tupperware container so it doesn't dry out. Then plant wing sticking up out of the soil, in a very well draining mix. Don't use ceramic pots. Some use cactus soil, perlite is good, or just potting soil with a good mix of perlite. Bottom heat is important. Keep them moist but don't go nuts drenching them every day. I tend to mist regularly after the first watering. Once they start growing you can VERY CAREFULLY pull off the seed coating around the little leaves. Plumerias like a lot of sun and they don't like a lot of water. And always a plastic pot with good drainage. plumeria101.com is a good web site for information, and this forum is awesome. Good luck with your plummies! Hope this helps !!
Okay ill get a few cuttings, quite a few as your supposed to leave them out for at least a week or so for the cut to heal. I was unable to get any today as I planned due to the rain. Hopefully tomorrow, and i'll list them tomorrow. Thanks for your interest. Diane
hi everyone. i have been growing them for many years and i have always just stuck the cutting straight into the soil. i have never heard that you should dry them first. even sometimes when a stalk gets broken off accidentally, i stick that right in the dirt, too, and get a new tree from it.
they are tropical plants and will not tolerate cold. i keep mine in large pots and bring inside as soon as it hits 40 degrees at night. over the winter they don't use much water and can go without much light, too, then come back in the spring. i have also grown them inside in a sunny room and they did just fine. i have heard they are really easy to grow from seed, though i've never tried it myself. i can tell you that in the many years i have grown them, they have been super easy to care for and the ONLY problem i have ever had is with cold. super low maintenance and carefree and beautiful, whether in bloom or not. i hope this helps answer some of you guys' questions.
Thanks for the info, I didn't know how to go about doing this right, so I went on a website, actually 2 and that's what they said let the cut end seal before planting. I have done the exact same thing you have, three times, I live in South FL so fortunately I don't have to worry about the cold. But all three of mine took also...I don't know....but thought it best to follow the experts advice. Regardless of what's worked for me & you..? Guess we were lucky. I looked into it because I wanted to make sure I did everything right, I did not know you were supposed to just use the tips of the plant, learned that, and I thought I needed to keep cut end wet, or moist and wondered how to ship like that. So, I very much appreciate you help, and like I said all three of my trees I took cutting put into the ground and they did fine...? Diane :)
I live zone 5. But I would love to try some to. Especially if they are that ease to care for. lol. I love plants. Mine would stay in a pot. I would rather have the cuttings though. F&W
I am clueless about the zones....guess I should learn that stuff huh? Oh, and I am still (I swear) gonna list cuttings. sorry I haven't donit yet, weather hasn't permitted, then I couldn't sleep one night....but slept thru the day!! Then my laptop was down all day!!! Its not even a month old!!!!! But today is a new day and I hope to get my but out there to get some, if I can brave the cold. It's a whole 46 degrees here in South FL!!!! for us its cold, probably sounds really stupid, but you get so used to the heat...that it doesn't take much of a drop in temp., for it to feel cold. Ok, ill let you get back to you're lives now....
Cuttings are the way to go... Used to work for a nursery named "the plumeria people" there were so many different varieties... Beautiful fragrant flowers will be watching this one
