Description

The listing, Compaq Presario V5000 notebook PC - 15.4" 64-bit 1.8GHz 1GB RAM 60GB HDD - details inside! has ended.

This is a nice laptop and is in very good shape, but it needs some TLC (tender loving care.) I am auctioning it AS-IS, for parts or repair, read details below.

The good:
1.8 GHz AMD Turion 64-bit processor, 1 gig 333MHz DDR RAM (32MB to 128MB shared w/ video), 60GB hard drive
Built-in Wireless-G WiFi
Burns DVDs and CDs
Battery is good and holds a charge
Keyboard clean and good, all keys work
15.4" (1280x800) screen is crisp and clear with no scratches and no dead pixels
Nice Altec Lansing speakers
Valid Windows XP home COA (certificate of authenticity)

The bad:
Laptop has problems powering on (lights come on, fans spin, but screen stays dark. Try a few times and it comes on and stays on fine. There is probably a trick to it.)
USB ports broken (they work internally, pins are there, it is missing the outer metal sleeve)
I can't seem to get Windows XP installed. Windows 98 will install but I can't find the right drivers (video, WiFi, LAN, USB). Windows XP Setup stays on "Starting Windows" after it has been installed.

I don't have time to mess with it so it's for auction here! It would make a nice laptop for web browsing and playing / recording DVDs, for someone who knows what's wrong with it!

Adult-owned, from a smoke-free home. Includes genuine HP/Compaq charger. Winner will pay actual shipping cost (USA and Canada).

I do my best to describe my auctions to the best of my ability. If I have forgotten anything or if you have any questions, please comment and ask, I will answer below. Thanks, and happy bidding!

Caught this listing late- hope you can answer before this ends but was this NOT connected to a power source for a long period of time? Do you know the memory max on this? Is it 2 or 4. As for trouble shooting- agree with trp but I believe VRANCH is closer to the source of the problem. But it is not the fan. with everything lit up and the hdd working but no screen- the processor is overheating due to the thermal paste has dried up-the screen will not kick in unless you apply fresh paste-best case scenario/worst case scenartio- the mainboard is blown-fried...in your case-hoping for the best case-good luck! I will bid- with caution , with a limit and if the memory max is 4. see how this goes

I just happened to check my phone and saw your comment; this laptop was on a shelf in the closet for probably two years, not connected to a charger.

I am pretty sure the max memory is 2GB.

I didn't do much troubleshooting (and definitely didn't think to check the processor thermal compound) but it makes a ton of sense. Replacing the heatsink compound could be an easy fix. If this model has a separate GPU, thermal compound would explain the intermittent boot screen and not getting past the text-only part of WinXP setup.

Great suggestion, thanks!

A trojan horse or any other form of malware will not necessarily destroy the harddrive. You can get auslogics registry defrag, AVG for viruses, and other free software downloads on CNET.com. I've been working in the tech industry since 1985. The laptop could most likely use some driver updates as well. As long as it is coming on it is NOT the harddrive!! Good luck on this!! Fanned!!

If it gets warm, it will shut off. The one I'm on now is the same type computer, I believe this one needs a fan. I hope this helps.... = )

sounds like the mbr master boot record you can use the repair fix on a installation disk if not a reinstall of a operating system

What's your approx. Figure or anyone watching, to get this back to perfect running shape. Computers have progressed a very long way since 2008 but seems good deal.

It sort of works but needs someone who can work on it and update the software (and maybe hardware). It takes a few tries to get it to turn on. As you can see in one of the photos, I just pulled up Listia with it. Thanks!

5600 credits be good for free shipping?
Feb 17th, 2013 at 8:52:34 AM PST by
Original
Sorry, that wouldn't even cover my cost to ship. I saw a similar PC with more problems from a 0% seller go for 50,000... so I'm thinking free shipping after 50,000. The LCD screen alone goes for $50+ on eBay. Thanks!

Incidently prod reason it wont go beyond windows startup window is because it isnt booting to the hdd first common mistake when installing os the os disc switches the boot order so it goes to cd rom to install os up to u to press f2 and go to setup and reset the order so that hdd boots first
Feb 16th, 2013 at 12:11:51 PM PST by

That;s good to know. The Windows XP setup files are already on the HDD, so when you boot up you have two options: Windows 98SE, or Windows XP Setup.

Thanks - not even that old, I think 2008. Nicer than most of the laptops I see on here. Just needs a little love.
