Apple never made an 8g 3rd gen call apple support at 1-855-362-6809 they will tell you that there is a lot of confusion about the 2nd gens because they released 2 batches and stores marketed the second batch as 3rd gen but it is not so the 2nd gens are just about obsolete except as use for mp3 player the ios cannot be updated anymore so it will not run alot of the apps out now.

also apple updated itunes in Nov 2012 so the 2nd gens no longer link properly.
