Margaret Chase Smith was the first woman from Maine to serve in Congress as well as the first woman to serve in both the House and Senate. In 1964 she became the first woman to have her name placed in nomination for the U.S. Presidency at a major party's convention.Smith has the record as the longest-serving female senator in United States history, ranking 11th in seniority when she left.
