Description

The listing, Rat's Vein/Pipsissewa - One Live Plant has ended.

The winner of this auction will receive ONE (1) live Rat's Vein (Pipsissewa) herb plant. I will be shipping it with a small amount of native soil, but please be ready to place your new plant into a pot or suitable location as soon as possible after you receive it.

Rat's Vein is a small, perennial flowering plant native to the United States. It belongs to the Pyrolaceae family.

It has been known by many names, including the following ones: Bitter Wintergreen, Butter Winter, Chimaphila Maculata, Chimaphilla Umbellata, Ground Holly, King's Cure, Love-in-Winter, King's Cure, Noble Pine, Pine Tulip, Pipsissewa, Prince's Pine, Pyrola, Rat's Vein, Rheumatism Weed, Winter Green.

It grows very well in shady, wooded areas here on the Cumberland Plateau. The picture above was taken of Rat's Vein plants growing at the edge of my front yard.

Is it? I grew up with it being called Rat's Vein and that was the only thing I ever heard it called until I saw it online by another name. Thanks for commenting.

ASW, what type of gardening do you do? I have access to quite a few plants local to our area and I'm starting to get into planting containers with mosses and lichens, tiny ground plants with even tinier but really pretty flowers, etc. I've thought I might list some of those plants soon, but not sure yet.

This is the Wiki link for the plant FrugalNoodle mentioned above. It does look remarkably like the plants I have in my yard. Regardless of what it's called...the auction is still one live plant...:D.

Do you know what zones are favorable to its growth?

What zone are you in Faye? I'm in 7a here. From what I understand, it doesn't do well in the hotter zones, but should grow well in most of the zones north of me. It grows wild here, but I'd think it could be grown in a pot in most areas so long as some thought was given to its needs. It doesn't like full or strong sunlight, because it's a woodland plant that generally grows in moderate shade, but I notice they don't seem to mind dappled shade, so it does have some sunlight tolerance.

Faye, the link below provides some good information regarding the plant. I couldn't find anything specifically related to its range zone-wise, but there's a lot about how to grow it, etc. I'd say that it would grow where you are, provided it's protected from strong sunlight and is growing in a place that makes it happy. Mainly, around here, it grows in environments that are subject to wet/damp conditions in winter, fall, and spring, and dry conditions in summer.
