To Andrea- just because something is stamped doesn't mean it's real and just because its not stamped it doesn't mean it's fake.
Not sure where you folks get this idea that a stamp or no stamp is a definite sign or whether there is hold or not.

arsayalayur is correct, a stamp is a stamp of assurance or reassurance. A majority of pieces are stamped, especially during recent history, but even then there are "fakes" only an acid test will verify content.

I have a ring passed down from my great grandma that has no stamp but is real with a ruby. It's been authenticated by a well respected jeweler in town. I also won a 10 kt ring that is stamped and found it's fake. Pretty ring. Nice auction.
