Here I have a most unique item! I have a 14 ct. gold filled necklace and a moose carved into the ivory. This technique is called scrimshaw and goes back to when the sailors working on whaling ships first practiced the art form. The word scrimshaw originated from a slang expression that was used to refer to anything that was the product of seaman's idle time.
