Description

The listing, Speckled Butter Beans Heirloom (15) has ended.

Hi, this auction is for 15 Speckled Butter Beans (Lima) 5th generation Heirloom. The speckled butter bean is one of 100 named varieties of the Lima bean, native to South and Central America. “Butter bean” is a Southern term for what are called Lima beans in other regions, and they are a familiar part of Southern cuisine. Pole types take 80 to 100 days to yield beans.lots and lots of beans! In hot weather, the pole variety will yield beans in about 78 days. Plant beans in a sunny location in well-drained, medium-rich soil. Self-pollinating butter bean. The "Florida Speckled" butter bean is purple when it is in the shell and buff-colored, splashed with maroon, when it is dried.Put poles or stakes into place before you plant pole varieties. Do not soak the seeds before you plant them and do not over water after you sow them. Sow seeds after the danger of frost has passed and the soil is at least 50 F.Sow pole types to 2 to 4 inches deep and 4 to 8 inches apart in rows that are 4 feet apart.Keep the soil evenly moist while the plants flower and form pods.Harvest the bean pods when they are expanded and starting to turn yellow or when they are brown and dry but before they shatter. Dry the beans quickly and store them in a dry, dark, cool place. No chance off crossing and guarantied Heirloom. If you would like info on saving seeds, or what veggies cross with one another feel free to ask, our veggies have never had insect sprays or artificial fertilizers. I do no that the word speckled butter bean is how we say Lima bean in the deep south, I think the true name of these Lima beans is Florida Lima bean. There are some that look a lot like these and they are called Christmas butter beans/Lima. I have some limas in another auction that my grandparents called butter peas, but they are actually a bush Lima, they are little red pea size butter beans. But the only two butter beans that i have found would be these that i have the speckled butter bean, and the other Christmas butter bean
