Putting them in a covered case doesnt complicate it any more than normal because these are not the "pop up" type. It opens the same way it normally would, and it is just something pretty to have in the bag instead of something plain :)
But if you wanted to use it for somethinf else, you can. My niece uses one for her pencils, and my sister uses hers for her make-up brushes
