Unfair comment by michaelmanly. Some things should remain to remind us of our horrible past. It's his to do what he wants to with. I would like to have it just as a general collector. Of course I would never wear it, but it is a historical artifact and any historical artifact is not free. Good item for show and tell at school shown as a symbol of hate. I have a German Swastika armband my father brought home from the WAR. There is a huge market for it, too.
Little known fact is if you watch Gone with the Wind after the war there's an interesting scene that tells you ONE SIDE of the story of the beginnings of the KKK, it was noble in principle and a desperate attempt for people to reclaim their autonomy. HOWEVER, I know it looks racist for me to even bring that up so I'll shut up just sayin... the KKK started as a way to protect the innocent from the government... turned into a hate group in the 20th century. Very Cool auction~LOVE HISTORY!!!
You hit the nail on the head!! Most people are ignorant of TRUE HISTORY. The Schools and the News Media are going to teach you what THEY want you to know, not the real facts.
How in the world are you making a "profit" from Listia?! How ignorant and NAIVE. Grown individuals that act younger than my two pre-pubescent children. That's a shame. I guess there have to be people like that in the world to keep us amused, eh?
I don't support the KKK either, but I LOVE this auction as a part of history. Apparently Mr. Michael Manly has never opened a history book - or wait - was your history teacher trying to "profit" from the history lesson of the KKK, too? Just sayin, Michael ;)
Great item, are there any markings on the back? And just want to say I don't think you should have to justify yourself to anyone. If they don't like it then don't bid. Some people are just so childish... F&W
@ lookedaway, i don't think my comment was unfair. like you said, it's his to do with what he wants and i'm free to have an opinion just like you showed yours. that's why we have a "comment" section on here. my comment was not negative, but merely a fact. and the seller is free to hide any and all comments if he chooses.
@rebeltaz...amusing rant. who said anything on here about rewriting history??? That's sad that they are doing that in Birmingham. I am originally from Decatur and love Birmingham and it's history. I actually agreed with you for the most part...except when you had to stoop to calling people ignorant because they might view things differently than you...what a shame because it makes your point invalid. Calling someone ignorant says more about you than it does the other person.
Silverdollardave, I wish you all the best. Thank for keeping your comments above board and mature. You have obviously gotten some great interest here and that's what Listia is all about (at least for me). If it sounded like I made an assupmtion on you personally, I apologize. The subject of KKK is obviously a very emotional one and sometimes a personal one and I am not oblivious to history as I have been accused of being. Some of the derogatory comments made on here (not by the seller) like calling other people "idiots" and "ignorance" remind me a lot of the history of the KKK. How ironic.
@KellyTaylor, I see you are new here so maybe you don't understand how Listia works. We are ALL looking to profit on here in someway or the other; otherwise we would not be using this site. That's okay. You get rid of stuff you don't want in exchange for stuff you do want. Profit does not always equal money.
Saying he is "trying to profit from it" is an assumption. He said he bought it at a flea market so he spent REAL money. This is Listia with credits. How much "profit" could he be making... seriously? & a sentence about ignorance with a misspelling in it is HILARIOUS!
LOL @ Araiderfan...then he messages everyone that doesn't agree with him....goes off on them for disagreeing...comes back on here and complains that everyone else are the ones that does understand that disagreeing is our constitutional right...then blocks whoever he contacts in fear of getting a dose of his own hypocrisy. Hahaha....too funny & ironic :)
My uncle was the grand wizard of the KKK and I remember his belt buckle, different from this one, but I've thought of it often as I wanted to keep it myself for a memento of the era. It is a time which I grew up in and lived. It is a time past. It is a relic.
Did anybody ever consider they might just be initials....I once dated a Kurt Kevin Kendricks, either way, it,s history. Somebody else is giving away a souvenir from Mount Rushmore, it represents the KKK also, he isn't getting all this...do you research. Good luck with your listing. Fanned, not bidding though, not a collector.
@piggystyle...take your own advice and don't even begin to think you know who I am. Speaking of childish, we should be able to comment freely on here without "pre-pubescent" rants at your level. It takes a small-minded person to make a personal attack on someone else. grow up.
I collect buckles and would like to have it, but I don't expect him to give it to me. What about Civil War collectibles. Fora collector of these items it would be silly to tell him he should steer away from Confederate artifacts. they want to tell the whole story. Same here, it tells a story of our history, whether good side or bad side is irrelevant.
If I had the credits I'd go for it. My late Uncle, too, would have appreciated it. He was once GW if you know what I mean. I'd be afraid to wear it, of course for fear of getting shot. LOL, not.........Relic of our history like it or not. Nice piece too.
It was interesting reading all the comments, by the way GREAT AUCTION! The purpose of history is to re-call the past (History is not what you heard at school but a serious un-bias study from every possible angle) so hopefully we do not make the same mistakes, so by getting rid of or trying to buried the bad history we could make a huge mistake, I am a pro history preservation person and although sad and terrible it was we should not forget, this is a great example that yes indeed it happened, thanks for posting! :))
The word "ignorant" is commonly used out of context to insult or to insight hurt on someone else. Normally in a casual conversation, keeping in mind the context of the conversation, the word "ignorant" or "ignorance" is used synonymously with stupid. "Misinformed" would be a better synonym for "ignorant" if the conversation was not meant to hurt another; I don't think "misinformed" fits this situation.
@michaelmanly -> ignorant (adjective): lacking knowledge or comprehension of the thing specified.... I don't know, seems apt to me. Contrary to popular vernacular, the word ignorant is not derogatory... As for my use of the phrase 'rewriting history', perhaps I should have said 'erasing the past'... mostly in reference to the comment by @dahle13 - "Throw it away, don't help the hate" as well as the opinions/actions of those here locally.
