Description
The listing, HP Pavilion XT963 has ended.
Used tower computer, fully tested and working. Has 1.2GHz CPU, 512MB Ram, 40GB HDD, 56K F/M, CD-RW, Built in sound and video, 10/100 LAN card, Floppy Disk Drive. Freshly installed copy of Puppy Linux so it will run fast despite its age and still be easy to use with a MAC style GUI.
It originally came with Windows XP Home as you can see by the COA on the side of the PC. Over time Windows XP has been bloated with bug fixes that make a computer like this one fairly slow. To keep it fast we have MacPup on it. It is a very small version of Linux that has a GUI interface on it very similar to a MAC. The OS is so small that it runs entirely in the ram so even an older pc like this moves lightning fast compared to a new one with Windows 7. The added plus is that Linux is open source so you can get freeware to do anything you want on it. As part of the basic OS it has all the software needed for hooking up to the net and browsing using Firefox, along with all the basic office software. Everything has already been installed, configured, and tested. Installation of additional programs, along with any changes you wish to make to the OS is very easy using the handful of buttons on the bottom center of the screen. Follow the link below for some screenshots and more information on the OS.
I think it is from around 2002. It was sold as part of a bundle from Wal-Mart exclusively. And entry level pc for people looking to get everything all at once with no customizing individual purchases for their needs. This is just for the tower though. We were not furnished with any of the other components.
Because Microsoft releases there operating systems while they still have many known problems. Then they try to fix them over time while still selling buggy software to make money. Linux on the other hand is open source and used in minimal configurations has nearly no bugs. Plus being open source you can customize it to do what you want without spending thousands of dollars the way you have to with MS. (And small versions like Puppy Linux are screaming fast on older computers like this one because the OS runs completely in the ram.)
