Description

The listing, Winter Hardy ✽ HIBISCUS CRIMSON WONDER ✽ 15 Seeds ✽ Organic has ended.

These are seeds from one of the stars of my summer garden, Hibiscus Moscheutos, CRIMSON WONDER, a tropical attitude in a northern latitude! Native to the U.S., this giant hibiscus will surely be a star in your garden! They bloom exotic flowers reaching up to 10" across on thick stalks of luscious green foliage. Plants possess deep crimson blooms with red/yellow stamens. These hibiscus prefer rich, moist soil, but have been drought tolerant in my garden. I cut them back early in the season for sturdier stalks and twice the blooms. They would make a great addition to a bog garden, marsh area or any garden bed that needs a tropical makeover. There is a butterfly that raises their young on the foliage, but has never become a nuisance. They are resistant to pests and disease, although you may need to pluck a Japanese beetle or two off. Be sure to mark the area where you plant them. They are very late to emerge from the soil in the spring, but amaze me by how quickly they reach full size in my zone 5 garden. The "strong shall survive" in my garden! You will appreciate my motto.

do you have to start growing them in a pot first?

I have done both, pots and garden-sown. They don't usually bloom the first year unless they are grown early in pots. They bloom every year now for me. They are a perennial where I live and come back each year, so I haven't planted many in years.

and are they perennials?

It depends what zone you are living. In 5 to 10 they are a perennial. In colder zones 1-4, they would be an annual like the hibiscus that live in Hawaii.
