*Meaning*
White sand and gravel .... these were used to symbolize purity, and were used around shrines, temples, and palaces. In zen gardens, it represents water.
They also serve as metaphorical devices, with the stones and gravel raked in certain patterns meant to symbolize mountains, water or other parts of a landscape. This contemplation was meant to trigger Zen enlightenment.
