It would really be used for anything as a charm by using a jump ring to attach. It fits a 16 gauge ring but not with much wiggle room. On a 16g it just moves side to side a little but seems a little stiff. So if you want it to swing a bit it might be better on an 18 gauge ring.

I am not sure what this is made out of but it doesn't bend easily. I think it is sterling silver but can't verify. It looks like a small piece of mother of pearl in the bottom but again, I can't say if that is really what it is.
