Description

The listing, WikiReader - Entire Wikipedia on One Cell Phone Size Device - 2 AA Last 12 Months - Free US Shipping has ended.

OK so here's the scenario. There is big Solar Mass Ejection sending magnetic waves and electrons to earth. It overloads the US electric grid and the country is now without power for the next 5-10 years. So you can't use your computer now to look at Wikipedia to see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheese#Making_cheese, how to make cheese from a cow you bought from the dairy farm that can't ship milk anymore, right?

Here’s another scenario. Your at a family dinner and your fancy brother whips out an iPhone when a disagreement comes up about the year the Vietnam war ended. While he looks up the answer, the topic shifts to the First Gulf War end date, and you whip out you Pocket Wikipedia and scoop him for that answer. Problem solved. You may not be as rich as he is, but hey whose device will work after Armageddon?

That’s right you can have the Wikipedia available to you for a whole year just using 2 AA batteries.

Features from http://thewikireader.com/features/:

"One screen. Three buttons. All the answers.
From history to current events, science to entertainment, Babylon to Babel fish—if it's in Wikipedia, it's in here.

Current
Quarterly updates keep pace with Wikipedia's ever expanding content. Download for free or have them mailed to your door.

Ready to go
Comes fully loaded. Turn it on and start exploring.

Expandable
Add languages, dictionaries and other wikis.

Efficient
Runs up to 12 months on two AAA batteries (included).

Simple
Only three buttons. Do a common SEARCH, retrace your HISTORY or let WikiReader surprise you with RANDOM selections. (Careful. That last one's addictive.)

Easy to read
The durable touchscreen is legible indoors and out, and the organic shape is a joy to hold.

Kid-safe
Includes parental controls.”

For bid gauging, this cost me about $80 with shipping. The cellophane is removed but I did not take the device out of the box, use it or test it in any way.

India having own products, and much better than Chinese ones. But still rules are rules, Govt. is promoting people to buy from local market. Uninsured mail is all the time at risk. Never send costly items via Ordinary mail.

Indian customs rules are really dumb, I remember how I was getting my letters opened and with custom stamps in case someone was sending me banknotes, they are really checking, reading, taking out stuff and off course taking stuff to their homes, in all legal way. Only way is to send via registered mail and that's costly even for US senders.

So sending registered mail stops this? Also if a buyer pays Customs can they still get electronics like this item?

This may sound nerdy but I happen to know that if Solar Mass Ejection occurred some time in the near future (which it very well might for all we know) that the US would be without power for only about 6-9 months. (30 months for the rest of the world)
Neat auction though!

That's a relief. Thanks for info. Is it true that they need just spend a billion dollars to outfit the nation's transformers with large size surge protector in order to make the grid safe?? Congress should get moving if true!!!

Hi, GREAT AUCTION! AS ALWAYS! So, all you need us a USB cord to download from your hard drive? Or does it come with one? Or, Am I misunderstanding? Or Misunderstood!? as Usual? Thanks:)

Thanks I enjoy listing neat stuff.

What I understand is for loading up Wikipedia updates you do the sneakernet route That means you need a USB adapter for your memory card.

So you take out the USB card from the reader and plug it into the adapter on your PC. The PC then reads the memory card as a separate disk and you download Wikipedia onto that disk via the internet.

Sounds good. By the way I ordered the 8 GB disk. It will come ith the shipment or closely following it arrives after I ship out the reader.

Yeah, thanks! 8gb would be great!
Your avatar is neat also!
Also, about the transformers...I don't think the government will do that, mainly because they never want to put out money until their is something to fix (that is, powers out). In any case it will take time and a load of money if SME does occur, because they will have to replace ALL of the transformers. Transformers are the most expensive of all individual electrical parts and involve a manufacturing procedure that is extremely complicated and expensive in itself, so replacing all of them will be a pain!
Thanks again for the memory card offer. I will definitely bid in the next few days!

Sounds good. Thanks for the info. Let's hope the government is proactive with this matter.
