Description

The listing, handmade doily has ended.

this is a very old, very dainty, hand made doily that my Great-Grandmother would have used sugar water to make the ruffles stand up. Then it would have been used to display one of her keep sake items we would be allowed to look at but not touch. It is one of a kind. Over the years some of the red has bled into the white from not using proper care in cleaning.

I understand about sugar water since my dear Grandmother used it too. It made them so stiff. She taught me how to crochet doilies and other things she made when I was 9 yrs. old and I am refreshing myself now because I don't want to forget a lost art. Just don't have anyone to pass the knowledge on to.

it really is getting to be a lost art, Grannie Cindy, and Grannie used to make the ruffles stand up so that absolutely non of the ruffled stiches hid another by simply laying down as in my photos. i used to think they were glass and woud break if i touched them they were so stiff

YIPPEE!! I'm not the only one trying to keep this art alive-Thanks for putting down the steel hook and making yourself known! I've been crocheting and collecting patterns and paraphenalia for 41yrs.and have the hoard to back it up! Believe it or not the winner may be able to lift out some of the bled color with a product called Restore. It's a quilt and vintage textile wash that I've had great success with for many unidentified stains and discolorations.Starching these beauties is an art in itself-The key is to relax, start early and check it often and if it looks good don't mess with it.I had one take 3 days to do because I couldn't leave well enough alone! that only happened once.....

nice hearing from you and it is a shame we settle for fast and easy cause the machine just doesn't have the same success that something hand made does. it is truely a lost art
