Description

The listing, 8 Elephant Ear Plants!! has ended.

Hi just wanted to say that our plants are growing in the ground until there is a winner. We will collect the largest plants for you. And in order to get these into the box I must cut the plants down to the bulb and they grow back fast! You will get a healthy batch of 8 elephant ear plants!!! Characteristics of Elephant Ear Plants:
In landscaping, elephant ears are grown for their large, heart-shaped leaves. While these leaves can reach 3' long and 2' wide in the tropics, in the North they will remain a little smaller -- but still impressive. Elephant ear plants can grow 8' tall in the tropics; in the North, a height of 2'-5' is more common (depending on growing conditions. Sun and Soil Requirements for Elephant Ear Plants:
Grow elephant ears in a slightly acidic soil in partial shade. As a wetland plant in the wild, elephant ear plants crave water. This makes them a good choice for wet areas where homeowners usually have trouble finding suitable plants. However if taken care of they can be grown in pots, a nice spot in the yard, and make great house plants. Plant Care for Elephant Ears:
Elephant ears are heavy feeders; fertilize them with a fertilizer high in nitrogen. Elephant ear plants are tropical but can be overwintered in cold climates. Just dig up the corms (bulbs) and keep them in a cool, but not freezing basement or garage, as you would store canna bulbs. During this period of dormancy, make sure the corms neither rot nor totally dry out. Replant in spring when danger of frost has passed. -----Please send your address threw listia---"Verified address". thanks!!

Yes there are a bunch of types of elephant ears, and we didnt no this until we started looking for information on them to post on listia. I have to be honest these elephant ears were planted by my wife's grandparents about 30 years ago, They started with about 20 plants. They then moved back to the city, and the elephant ears made themselves a very large family about 5000 lol, as our house is on a creek and there is a bunch of water, We have ask about the exact name of this particular variety and no one seems to remember, so we didnt want to post any false info. The height of the plants I posted are very true, I am six ft one and the older plant out there are my height on down depending on sunlight, they do produce a yellow flower threw out the spring and summer. Hope this helps, thanks for watching

What zone are these grown in the best?? f&w

They would grow best in A tropical setting, Although They can be grown in just about any climate, In the deeper south you would not have to remove them from the soil in the winter, We here at home reach the lower 30's to upper 20's in the winter, and ours have always stayed in the dirt. In the north where the soil would probably freeze, I would recommend, removing them from the soil and storing for the winter, much like a canna bulb, Or you could grow in a container with water from the bottom, they do well in part light so a sunny window in the winter would work great

There are a bunch of varieties of elephant ears, some get even larger than the ones i have The giant elephant ear. And there are some cool looking ones that are black, red etc. It dose take a while to get them really big, and they do like a bunch of food to get them to a giant size, on average your going to have 4 foot tall plants depending on sunlight and water.

gid doesn't know what he/she is talking about. It's not just your raves over them. I've seen elephant ears in real life, and would love to have some. Not sure if they'd grow in the soil in my mom's yard. (My hubby and I rent her house from her). She's had a HUGE cedar tree in the front yard for years; and I'm afraid the dirt is probably too acidic. I'm fanning you, but was far out-bidden by the time I discovered your auction. I sure would like to try to grow this! I've been wanting them for many years, since I was a child and my friend showed me theirs and told me about it!!! =DDD

Ive wondered about the soil and it being to acidic also, but we live out in the country(against the national forest)and there are a bunch of pine trees, and from what i have read the pine needles will make your soil a bit acidic also, and no problems with most of the plants and veggies. We do try to keep these listed threw out the growing season, so this will not be the last one you may run in to, we have plenty of them to share with everyone:O)
