Description

The listing, Heirloom Clary Sage Seeds - Medicinal Herb (organically grown) has ended.

20 seeds.

100% organically grown. I use only organic compost and fertilizers. NO chemicals or pesticides ever used in my garden!

This biennial blooms summer to early fall. 3' - 4' tall. Likes full sun yet will tolerate some shade. Can tolerate some cold but is only hardy to Zone 6 and possibly protected areas of Zone 5.

Attracts honeybees and other pollinators.

Purplish blue flowers grow in tall bushy spires and are strongly scented with a high resin content. The entire plant releases a pleasant fragrance in the garden.

Both leaves and flowers are edible. Flowers are often candied or dipped in batter and fried as a delicious fritter. Leaves can grow to be 6-8" dish size, they are mild flavored and can be used in cooking. A common dish served In Victorian times were of the whole, large leaves dipped in four and egg and sautéed til golden brown.

Tea is made from both the leaves and flowers and has a calming, uplifting effect.

Clary Sage is best known for its therapeutic properties; antidepressant, antiphlogistic, anti-spasmodic, aphrodisiac, deodorant, emmenagogue, hypotensive, nervine, sedative, tonic and uterine.

Thanks for checking out my listing! Happy Growing! :)

F&W wonder if anyone's heard of people having any luck with this herb through our humid, hot summers?

TY for the F&W! I do know it loves hot weather and from what I have read it can take humidity. Just be sure not to overwater. It's a member of the mint family if that is of any help, and its origin is Meditteanean.

How well do you think this would grow in a container? I live in an apartment and am starting a container garden this spring.

Thank you and awesome auction!!

Thanks for the compliment and interest!!!!

It will do fairly well in a pot as long as it is large (3 to 5 gal). They will produce flower stalks, only smaller. I have seen them produce a flower stalk in the first season in a pot!, others not til the second. I found that I needed to pinch off the larger leaves as the plant grows on a regular basis to keep the plant happy.
