The listing, Recent Postcard CAHOKIA MOUNDS, IL Monk's Mound has ended.
This postcard image is of Monk's Mound, 100 feet high, from which the Great Sun ruled a prehistoric of 10,000-to-20,000 people a thousand years ago. It is the largest prehistoric earthwork in the Americas. It was the largest of 120 mounds at Cahokia Mounds. We don't know what they called themselves, it was named Cahokia Mounds for the Illini tribe that lived at the long-abandoned site when the French arrived. French monks for a time lived on one of the terraces, hence the name, Monk's Mound.
