1943 Lincoln steel cent
the 1943 steel lincoln cent was struck of zonc coated steel for one year ONLY, during world war II. when copper was needed for the war effort. because the pennies were often mistaken for dimes, mant people refused to accept them as change. The mint had no choice but to discontinue the production of the steel cent and in 1944 found its substitue.


The 1944-1946 lincoln cents are often referred to as "shell case" these coins were minted with copper recovered from expended shell cases found on battleships and battlefields around the world. The shell cases were shipped back to the U.S. where they were melted and made into the lincoln cents. the particular Lincoln cents have the classic wheat ear reverse design.
