A very sophisticated gem of a necklace! The chain is constructed of long Sterling Silver beads with six round beads toward the front of the necklace. The focal point is an oval Garnet approximately 1/4" high that is set in more Sterling Silver. This is held in place by two of the round beads on the chain -- keeping it in place. This necklace will not allow the clasp to suddenly make its way to the front -- making it look askew. This one will stay in place consistently, and look beautiful while wearing. The clasp is a twist together clasp which is easier for those with arthritis. Just place the two ends together and twist! That's it!

Thank you so much for your question. It is not open. It is the remainder of the Sterling Silver setting over the back, and is stamped .925. I should have thought to have included a picture of this. I will remember that in the future. Thank you so much.
