Vaseline glass

The most typical colour of uranium glass is pale yellowish-green, which in the 1920s led to the nickname vaseline glass based on a perceived resemblance to the appearance of petroleum jelly as formulated and commercially sold at that time. Specialized collectors still define "vaseline glass" as transparent or semitransparent uranium glass in this specific color.

"Vaseline glass" is now frequently used as a synonym for any uranium glass, especially in the United States, but this usage is not universal. The term is sometimes carelessly applied to other types of glass based on certain aspects of their superficial appearance in normal light, regardless of actual uranium content which requires a blacklight test to verify the characteristic green fluorescence.

In the United Kingdom and Australia, the term "vaseline glass" can be used to refer to any type of translucent glass. Even within the United States, the "vaseline" description is sometimes applied to any type of translucent glass with a greasy surface lustre.

To Mr. GEORGEKAGAFAS above you made yourself look really stupid with that comment, and I can assure you vaseline glass does exist and is very real, even if google couldn't find it when you typed it in. There are dealer books produced just to reference vaseline glass, I own one. I collect and deal in vaseline glass for actual money, as well as other antiques and vintage items. Maybe you should try googling all the vintage jewelry you post with outrageous credits as a starting bid, then you'll find out that just because it has glass paste rhinestones and is old, doesn't make it rare or monetarily valuable. If anyone is trying to rip someone off by misrepresenting something out of you or this seller, it's you. All the info the seller gave is accurate, right down to the debate over the terms used to describe the different types of vaseline glass based on the color variations. To the seller good luck, I am now a fan and I am watching this piece for myself! :) I listed a couple of pieces of vaseline glass with shipping here and did really well so you should do well also.

I'm sure he did there are a lot of what I call "know it all hobby antique dealers" on listia, he is one of them. I've flagged several auctions of misrepresented antiques over the years I've been on here. People seem think if its old its always "rare and valuable", to them maybe but to the industry not so much... And they all get mad if anyone challenges their information. I had one guy tell me with is repro snuff bottles "museum quality peices are readily available to purchase" in defense of his crappy repros. That statement in itself makes no sense and only a fool would believe it. But a lot of people are foolish and have no ability to think for themselves. There are some people on here that do know their stuff and know quality from crap.
