Description
The listing, Antique Makeup Compact has ended.
This is just too pretty to throw out! It's a metal container with a gold mesh bottom. It opens to display a mirror and an area where the makeup was. The makeup is gone so that area is empty. Maybe someone can find a use for this. There's no markings on this compact. It's about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. I hope to find it a new home!
Questions & Comments
this is really pretty, but do you mean it's a "collectible" instead of antique? antique - being more than a hundred years old. If it's a real antique, could you provide more details. :>) Thanks
Sorry! I used antique to imply very old. I have no idea how old it really is. I based it on how long I knew my husband's aunt, as it was hers, and she had it as long as we've been married (30 yrs). Didn't realize an item needs to be at least 100 yrs old to be considered an antique. Thanks for the clarification.
i was only asking to clarify. Yes, an antique is at least 100 years old and from the picture it qualified, but i wasn't sure. I'm watching and bidding!
It's vintage. Probably from the 1920's-1930's. Maybe Whiting & Davis. I would know better if I saw it in person but I both sell and collect these type of compacts.
Thanks for the additional information. It's a very interesting compact. I love the gold mesh on the bottom. It's been sitting in my drawer for several years and needs a new home. Good luck with the auction.
The gold mesh is typical whiting & davis. I have an enameled mesh purse that my grandmother used when she got married (hanging on a wall) & I have other gold mesh evening bags that I've collected over the years & the matching coin purses. LOL! I'm interested in it for a dressing table where I have antique & vintage cosmetic jars & compacts on display.
Wow! That's wonderful! Right now your the highest bidder. This compact is in excellent condition. It still closes securely. Sounds you have the perfect place for it! Good luck in the auction.
tuichief, this is considered a "smalls" in antique jargon. Other "smalls" would be hairbrushes, mirrors, earrings, etc. :>) still bidding and watching. Oh, yea, believe it or not, i get my knowledge from historical novels and mysteries!!!! i luv books. :>)
This is out of my area of expertise. According to Wikipedia " It is common practise to define "antique", as applying to objects at least 100 years old. Collectables are, generally speaking, the possible antiques of the future and generally less than 100 years old."
