With all due respect, modem is the wrong term. Modems take phone cables and are generally associated with dial-up connection. While cat-5e connections look similar, they are a tad bit wider than a phone cable and thus will not fit in to any phone port.

Cat-5e cables are used to connect a computer to an internet router (the kind associated with higher-speed connections) or to any other Ethernet-capable device, such as a network-able printer, network terminal, or network expansion antenna.

That being said, with a little bit of magic, you can also use any variant of Ethernet cable to connect one computer (the client) to another computer (the server) and communicate between the two over the cable.

Additionally, with the growing popularity of VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) phones in the workplace, Ethernet cables can be used to connect a VoIP-enabled phone to a network terminal.

For the record, this particular variant of Ethernet cable can support a 1,000 Mbps maximum bandwidth connection.

Hope that helps.
