Such a great question :) alot of your antique or vintage Sterling was Vermeil washed . The term Vermeil can not be used if the Sterling is covered with a base metal before being washed unless a different base metal is diclosed . Vermeil is at least 10k and a minimum of 2.5 microns thick . >okay that is the technology explanation < :) ... My explanation , your vintage , basically 1970's & back when the Sterling silver was much more heavier , not plated , etc. they washed it in Vermeil , as i wrote above the sterling had to show also , to make the piece much more prettier . Look on my last vintage ring I sold it was also Vermeil washed .I went to Estate sales for 26 yrs & have a safe full of rings , I have let a few go here , I also have some other pieces that I plan to let go , in time , alot are also vermeil . I hope this helped & anyone else whom is not aware of the meaning . Most vintage collectors could explain also . I hope this helps .Thank you Lots

Its mostly yellow but shimmers of Sterling show through . As you can see it says Sterling* , after these auctions are over , I will be putting up some gold pendants & chains that are not vintage .
