Description

The listing, Civil war Soldiers uniform buttons has ended.

These are from the lapel of a civil war soldier and are solid brass with a screw on back... The one is missing the post...THESE ARE NOT REPRODUCTIONS...Those had a double pin back that would stick through the clothing. These were made to go through the button hole and screw on...not pinned on and the crossed muskets was a FLAT disc...in the ones from the 40's they used the same casting for both of them...rounded..not flat!!!...Thats how you know if they are fake, last 2 pictures shows what I just described(Double Pin Back and both are rounded)...THESE ARE THE REAL DEAL Thanks for looking and good luck to all... PLEASE NO NEGITIVE COMMENTS OR I WILL BLOCK YOU...FOREVER... Sorry I had one and I will not tolerate stupid people... I will not let ignorance ruin my Listia fun...THANKS!!! Happy Trails Folks

I just updated the auction with details to prove otherwise... These are not reproductions... the last picture shows what the fake ones look like. These came from a farmhouse in a town known for battles and camps, Hundred, West Virgina. I did some research myself when I found them. The front cast was the same cast but the rear was larger on the newer ones because they were using all the metals back then for musket balls, horseshoes and swords. Thus giving it a simple screw on back to go through a sewn in hole on the lapel. Thanks for the comment!!!!! Hope this clarifies this for all! Thanks and please let me know if I can anwer anything else

Inspect the shank on the back of the button. The shank is a small loop used to attach the button with thread. The way the shank is attached indicates the era in which the button was manufactured. Civil War era buttons usually show a circular depression at the base of the button around the shank. A small, very round shank "eye" also indicates a Civil War period button. Shanks inset into holes in the button didn't happen until after World War I.

Inspect the button's "back mark." This is lettering on the back of the button which identifies the button manufacturer. Scovill & Co. Waterbury, Manufacturing was the most prolific military uniform button manufacturer during the Civil War. W.H. Horstmann & Sons was another popular button maker during that era.

I believe these are collar discs, not buttons. collar discs had a screw back, like these , and date to about 1936

I don't think you need to take them down. They're nice. They just aren't civil war buttons. If I could send you a photo, I would. But I think if you do a google search on US military collar discs, you'll see them. They appear to be circa 1936. If I remember correctly, they're type II, maybe III.
