Description
The listing, 1848 BRAIDED HAIR U.S LARGE CENT "165 YEARS OLD" has ended.
This is a 165 year old Braided Hair U.S. Large Cent. It is not so perfect, but in pretty good shape for a circulated coin this old. This style was made from 1840-1857. Cents and half cents were the first coins struck for circulation by the United States Mint. Large Cents were coined every year from 1793 to 1857 with the exception of 1815, when a lack of copper prevented production. All were coined at the Philadelphia Mint. All of these are great historical pieces. Diameter 23 mm Weight 5.44 Grams Please Grade for yourself. I am not qualified to grade coins. Please BEWARE of people grading coins on any site. Some may pose as Legitimate Graders and have no credentials at all. I am certain that a qualified Grader would never Grade any coins with only the use of a picture. Free Shipping!
By the year 1839, no one inside or outside the U.S. Mint were satisfied with the design of the large cent, including the creator, Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht. The large cent had been the subject of ridicule since its very beginning, mostly for the designs. They are loved by today’s collectors, but the initial reaction was far from enthusiastic. Miss Liberty had been described as “Liberty in a Fright”, “Fat Mistress”, “Silly” and “Booby” over the years.
The inspiration for Gobrecht’s new 1839 design was the classic figure of Love in Benjamin West’s painting, Omnia Vincit Amor. The braided hair over the brow of Liberty, her coronet and the long loose flocks of hair running down her neck reflect the Empire style that was a part of American hair and clothing fashion at the time.
Thanks! Bought this at a coin auction many years ago for my collection and then upgraded. It is basically a very nice coin and a great historical piece. FB.
