These are stretch cord. I have also made them with ribbon, nylon, and a couple other things. :-)

I have bigger than average ankles would these fit?

They are stretchy. My daughter in law wears size 9 shoe and she has thick ankles as well and they fit her. I can't tell you for sure they would fit you, but as I said, they stretch.
