Description

The listing, Lot of all 4 35% Silver "S" Mint Mark Jefferson War Nickels 1942-S 1943-S 1944-S 1945-S has ended.

Here are all 4 dates of the 35% silver "S" mint marks in the Jefferson nickel series, produced in World War II. During this tumultuous time, copper and nickel were in high demand by the military and industry, and for 4 years, the United States mint changed the composition of the Jefferson nickel from 75% copper and 25% nickel to 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese. Of the four, the 1944-S is the rarest, with a mintage of 21.6 million.

The obverses of the coins are shown in Picture 1. All of the coins have clear dates, mint marks (all above Monticello in large letters), and other lettering. Rims are generally very good, with some inconsequential very tiny dings that I can only see with my 5x loupe and bifocals.

Pictures 2 and 3 show the obverse and reverse of the 1942-S. It grades at VG-, with the VG standard requiring that the second pillar from the right on Monticello main entrance in the middle is nearly gone. My 5x loupe shows me that the second pillar is virtually gone, with more of an outline remaining.

Pictures 4 and 5 show the obverse and reverse of the 1943-S, which grades at G+, since there is no evidence of the second pillar as mentioned above in the 1942-S description.

Pictures 6 and 7 show the obverse and reverse of the 1944-S, which grades at VG- since the second pillar is virtually gone like in the 1942-S. Plus there is a scratch going at a diagonal over the middle of Monticello from NW to SE.

Pictures 8 and 9 show the obverse and reverse of the 1945-S, which grades in F+ condition, the best condition of the grouping. I cannot quite grade it at VF, because the criteria for such is that the second pillar be plain and complete on both sides, and that is not quite the case.

All Listia rules apply; I can only ship upon receiving your verified address. Shipping is done w/tracking and the nickels will be in 2x2s with mylar protection.
